The United Nations has suspended its operations in Yemen’s Sa’ada region, following the detention of more UN staff by Houthi authorities. This move aims to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel and partners. The pause will allow for negotiations with the de facto authorities to secure the release of detained staff members.
The situation in Yemen has been dire, with the Iran-aligned Houthis controlling much of the country since 2014. Since 2021, dozens of UN staff have been detained by the group. With over 24 UN staff currently held captive, the pause is a significant step to address these concerns and facilitate humanitarian aid delivery.
The UN remains committed to supporting millions of people in need across Yemen, despite this temporary setback.
