A UN peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon has shot down an Israeli drone that was conducting “routine information-gathering and reconnaissance activity”. However, the Israeli military says it did not fire at any peacekeepers.
The incident occurred amid escalating tensions between Israel and Hezbollah. The Lebanese government is under pressure to disarm the powerful militant group. The UN said its peacekeeping force, known as UNIFIL, applied “necessary defensive countermeasures” to neutralize the drone.
But the Israeli military claims that shortly after the drone was shot down, an Israeli tank fired towards the peacekeepers and a grenade dropped near their mission. No one was wounded in the incident.
