UN Special Rapporteur Blames Iran’s Regime for Killings and Torture

UN Special Rapporteur Javid Rehman has condemned the human rights abuses faced by Iran’s Sunni Baluch minority, calling them “shocking”. Since the start of the 2022 protests, more than half of those killed were from the predominantly Baluchi and Kurdish-populated provinces. Children under the age of 18 accounted for at least 63% of recorded protest victims.

Last year’s executions revealed an alarming trend, with the average age of documented victims being just 36 years old. More than half (502) of these victims were executed on drug-related charges, despite Iran’s regime controlling major global trafficking operations through its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and mafia networks.

The use of the death penalty and corporal punishment has long been widespread in Iran, with the regime’s abuse escalating following the 2022 uprising sparked by Mahsa Amini’s death in custody.
