The North Carolina women’s soccer team has secured its spot in the national championship match for the 28th time in program history. On Friday night, the No. 2-seeded Tar Heels dominated top-seeded Duke, 3-0, in the 2024 NCAA College Cup semifinals.
Kate Faasse scored her 20th goal of the season and became the nation’s outright leading goal scorer as she led the Tar Heels to victory. Olivia Thomas also found the back of the net, marking her eighth goal of the year. The win marked UNC’s fourth meeting with Duke this year, with the Tar Heels winning both postseason matches.
The Blue Devils struggled to find their footing, outshooting the Tar Heels 13-8 but failing to capitalize on scoring opportunities. UNC’s defense held strong, anchored by Aven Alvarez, Trinity Armstrong, Emerson Elgin, and Bella Gaetino, who limited Duke to just four shots during the second half.
The win improves UNC’s record to 21-5 (7-3 ACC) on the year and sets up a matchup with Wake Forest in the national title game on Monday, Dec. 9. The Tar Heels will look to continue their dominant performance as they take on the Demon Deacons at WakeMed Soccer Park.
