Uncle Nearest Whiskey Tangled in $100 Million Lawsuit

A Tennessee-based whiskey brand, Uncle Nearest, is embroiled in a lawsuit with its lender, Farm Credit Mid-America, over defaulted loans worth more than $100 million. A federal judge has ruled that the company will be overseen by a court-appointed receiver.

The dispute began when Farm Credit Mid-America claimed that Uncle Nearest had failed to repay several loans and overstated its whiskey barrel inventory. However, the company’s CEO, Fawn Weaver, has disputed these claims, calling them “salacious and inaccurate.”

Uncle Nearest acknowledged inflating its barrel inventory but blamed a rogue chief financial officer who was terminated from the company. The judge ultimately ruled that a receiver is necessary to protect Farm Credit’s interests despite some outstanding factual disputes surrounding the purchase of a Vineyard home.

The case may play out while events continue at the Vineyard home, including a recent gospel brunch hosted by Ebony Magazine and Uncle Nearest. Despite being under a gag order, CEO Fawn Weaver remains optimistic about the company’s future.
