United Natural Foods, Inc., a leading health food wholesaler and primary distributor for Whole Foods, has taken its systems offline following a massive cyberattack. The company has identified unauthorized activity in its systems and is investigating the cause.
In a regulatory filing on Monday, UNFI confirmed that it became aware of an incident on June 5, which caused temporary disruptions to its business operations. The company ships products to over 30,000 grocery stores, including Whole Foods, and makes private label, fresh, and its own branded products.
Whole Foods customers have reported seeing empty shelves and smaller-than-usual deliveries on social media. UNFI has signed a new distribution agreement with Whole Foods through 2032, but the impact of the cyberattack is not yet clear. The company’s shares fell over 9% in early trading as it works to minimize disruption.
UNFI is working closely with suppliers and clients to address the issue, but no further information is available on the current status of the systems.
