United Airlines is expanding its premium economy seats on planes, offering more comfort and amenities to passengers. The airline’s chief commercial officer, Andrew Nocella, said that the carrier underestimated demand for its premium economy product when it was first introduced in 2019.
To address this, United plans to add more seats with larger recliners, priority check-in and boarding, as well as better meals and amenities than coach class. The airline expects this expansion to generate good returns and will focus on growing the Premium Plus cabin.
The Premium Plus cabin offers a higher-end experience than coach but at a price point that’s more affordable than business class. Passengers get access to upgraded recliners, priority services, and perks like lounge access, hotel status, and flexible travel credits.
United is not alone in its efforts to boost premium seats; other airlines are also expanding their offerings. Delta Air Lines plans to reevaluate its cabin layouts to increase high-end seats, while American Airlines aims to grow its mix of premium seats by 50% by the end of the decade.
