United Airlines and JetBlue have announced a new partnership to expand connectivity primarily from New York and Boston areas. The airlines will share flight slots at their respective hubs in the New York area, including Newark Liberty International Airport, and passengers will be eligible to use United MileagePlus miles across both carriers.
The agreement, named Blue Sky, marks a significant return for United Airlines to John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), which it abandoned in 2022 due to operational issues at Newark Liberty International. According to reports, JetBlue will give United access to slots for up to seven new daily round-trip flights starting in 2027.
This partnership aims to enhance connectivity between the two airlines’ networks, particularly from high-volume connecting hubs such as Washington Dulles Airport (IAD), Chicago-O’Hare International Airport (ORD), and Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). United’s expanded presence at JFK will provide customers with more options and benefits.
The partnership is expected to alleviate some of United Airlines’ operational challenges, which have been highlighted by recent cancellations of flights from Newark Liberty International. This move is also unique in that it allows the airlines to share loyalty benefits across each other’s networks, potentially paving the way for a new joint loyalty program.
