UnitedHealth Group CEO Brian Thompson, 50, was shot and killed by an assassin outside a Manhattan hotel on Wednesday morning. Police say the motive for the brutal attack is still unknown, but new evidence has investigators hopeful they’re closing in on the killer.
A cellphone, water bottle, and bullet casings with messages like “deny,” “defend,” and “depose” were found at the scene. CCTV footage shows the suspect wearing a light brown jacket, black face mask, and sneakers before fleeing into an alley on an electric bike. A phone was recovered in the alley, while a water bottle and candy wrapper are believed to be linked to the shooter.
Police believe the shooter may have dropped some of these items during their escape. DNA or fingerprints from these clues could help identify the killer. Investigators think the suspect may have used a subway to get to Midtown Manhattan, possibly with an electric bike pre-positioned in the area for a quick getaway. However, it was initially reported that the suspect used a Citi Bike, but later confirmed they rode an “electric e-Citi bike” northbound towards Central Park. The investigation is ongoing.
