The University of Maryland Extension has launched new resources to support chicken farmers amid the ongoing bird flu outbreak. The extension’s website now features virtual education, including Zoom webinars on safe practices and outbreak response strategies. Experts stress the importance of biosecurity measures such as limiting visitors, wearing dedicated footwear, and maintaining a line of separation between indoor and outdoor areas.
According to Dr. Jon Moyle, State Extension Poultry Specialist, “Biosecurity is crucial in preventing the spread of this disease.” He advises farmers to limit visitors and require visitors to do so by washing their hands or wearing dedicated footwear. Dedicated footwear is also emphasized as essential for preventing the introduction of outside pathogens into poultry houses.
The University of Maryland Extension is providing timely updates on the latest outbreak developments, as well as a comprehensive library of biosecurity protocols, guidelines, fact sheets, and hotlines. This effort is a collaboration between UME, the Maryland and Delaware Departments of Agriculture, Delaware Cooperative Extension, and the Delmarva Chicken Association.
Farmers can access more information and resources by visiting the extension’s poultry website at go.umd.edu/poultry.
