Thousands of blooming peonies at the University of Michigan’s W.E. Upjohn Peony Garden were destroyed overnight. The garden, which is the nation’s largest collection of flowering peony plants, had over 800 distinct varieties. Director Tony Kolenic described the incident as an “act of disregard” that affects not just the garden but also the community and life itself. Despite the damage, Kolenic expressed hope that the garden will recover and bloom again. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the destruction.
