Catja Peterson has achieved her goal of becoming an interior designer after graduating from the University of Minnesota’s College of Design. She starts her full-time job at Minneapolis architecture firm HGA on Monday.
Peterson credits her early start and proactive approach to securing the role. During college, she scheduled frequent informational interviews with professionals to determine which career path suited her best. She also attended numerous industry events over two years, networking opportunities that helped her build connections in the field.
In addition to event attendance, Peterson secured multiple internships, including one at HGA that led to a full-time offer. This experience proved invaluable in helping her stand out as a candidate.
For college graduates facing light resumes due to pandemic-related internship suspensions, Jennifer Carlson of Robert Half suggests being open to contract or temporary jobs. Even if it’s not the dream job, these opportunities provide valuable experience and allow networking within companies, helping individuals build their professional profile.
