University of Mississippi Student Jay Lee’s Remains Found in Carroll County

The remains of Jimmie “Jay” Lee, a missing University of Mississippi student, have been found in Carroll County, Miss., bringing an end to a two-year search. The discovery was made by hunters off Highway 82 outside the town of Winona, near a well-known dumping ground for refuse and tires.

Carroll County Coroner Mark Stiles confirmed that the site was previously known to local law enforcement and business owners in the area. Lee’s body included a gold necklace with the name “Jaylee,” matching one from his Instagram photos.

DNA evidence confirms that the remains belong to Jay Lee, who was 20 when he went missing. He was a student from Jackson and a prominent member of the LGBTQ community at Oxford, Miss.

Oxford Police Department confirmed the recovery of Lee’s remains and expressed gratitude to the Lee family and friends for their support during the investigation. The Carroll County Sheriff’s Department declined to comment on the discovery.

The discovery comes after a December 2024 mistrial in Timothy Herrington’s trial, who was accused of murdering Lee to conceal a relationship between the two. A new trial date is still pending.
