Unknown Disease in Congo Kills Over 60 People

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is monitoring an unknown disease in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has killed at least 60 people and sickened over 1,096. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that initial lab tests have been negative for Ebola and Marburg virus disease.

Symptoms of the disease include fever, headache, chills, vomiting, diarrhea, cough, and body aches. While some samples tested positive for malaria, which is common in the area, officials are investigating possible food and water contamination.

The WHO has delivered emergency medical supplies, including testing kits, and trained over 80 community health workers to detect and report cases of the disease. The CDC is also engaging with local health authorities to offer support and investigate the cause of the outbreak. This marks the third time in recent months that officials have identified an increase in illness and deaths in a different area of Congo.
