Google has introduced a new system-level security mode called Advanced Protection in the latest Android 16 update. This feature provides Google’s strongest protection against online dangers, malicious apps, unauthorized device access, and other sophisticated threats.
Advanced Protection is designed for users who want stronger defense, travel frequently, or handle sensitive data. It’s a useful feature for high-risk users like politicians, activists, and journalists. Even casual users can benefit from this all-in-one bulletproof security system.
Here’s how to enable Advanced Protection on your smartphone:
1. Go to Settings > System > Software Update.
2. Open the Settings app and visit the Security and privacy section.
3. Tap on Advanced Protection.
4. Turn on the Device Protection toggle.
5. Restart your smartphone if asked.
When you turn on Advanced Protection, you’ll notice several behind-the-scenes changes. Your phone will continue to look the same, but important restrictions will be imposed in the background. These trade-offs feel reasonable when you get stronger defense in return.
To maximize protection, enroll your Google Account in the Advanced Protection program:
1. Visit Google’s Advanced Protection page and hit Get Started.
2. Sign in with your Google Account and click Enroll in Advanced Protection.
3. Follow on-screen instructions to add a recovery email and recovery phone (if needed).
Note that this feature is not turned on by default, so you’ll need to enable it manually. It’s a quick and straightforward process.
Advanced Protection is similar to Apple’s Lockdown mode, but exclusive to Android. By enabling this feature, you’re essentially creating an equivalent of a lockdown mode for your Android phone.
