Unusual Adult Cases Mark Modern US Measles Outbreaks

The current US measles outbreak follows a familiar pattern, with the virus first spreading in areas with low childhood vaccination rates, such as Texas. However, experts have observed unusual patterns at the outbreak’s edges. Unlike previous outbreaks, which primarily affected children, this one is seeing cases among adults, many of whom are unvaccinated.

The spread of measles to New Mexico has involved half of confirmed cases and potentially one death, both of which involve adults. This trend is consistent with expert warnings that adults are now susceptible to measles, a disease typically associated with childhood vaccination.

In the past year, more than a quarter of US measles cases have been among adults aged 20 and older. As the outbreak persists, experts predict it will continue for at least a year.
