Upcoming Lunar Events Set to Dazzle Skies This Spring

A series of spectacular astronomical events is unfolding this spring. On February 27, 2025, at 7:45 p.m. EST, a new moon will occur, marking the first supermoon event of the year. Although it won’t be directly visible due to the sun’s glare, its gravitational effects on tides and oceans will still have noticeable consequences.

A supermoon, by definition, occurs when the moon is at perigee, its closest point to Earth. This phenomenon happens every month but is often overshadowed by more attention-grabbing events like solar eclipses. However, the impact of a supermoon on tides, particularly during new moons, should not be underestimated.

In addition to the upcoming supermoon, Ramadan will begin with the sighting of the crescent moon after sunset on February 28 or March 1. This marks an important event in the Islamic calendar and will be visible only through large telescopes at that time.

Later, a total lunar eclipse will occur on March 13-14, turning the full moon a deep red hue, often referred to as a “blood moon.” This spectacular sight will be visible across North and South America. A partial solar eclipse on March 29 will follow, with up to 94% of the sun obscured at its peak.

Finally, the sighting of the new crescent moon after sunset on March 30-31 will mark the end of Ramadan and signal the start of Eid al-Fitr.
