Upcoming Meteor Showers and Planetary Parade in January 2025

A stellar start to 2025 is expected for stargazers, with two notable events in the first month of the year. The Quadrantid meteor shower will occur at the beginning of January, while a “parade of planets” can be seen later in the month.

The Quadrantid meteor shower is caused by fragments from an asteroid called 2003 EH1 and is considered one of the best annual meteor showers. It will peak on Jan. 2-3 and can be seen with the naked eye, provided observers find a dark location away from city lights.

In addition to the meteor shower, six planets will align in the evening sky, creating a celestial event known as a planetary parade. This alignment is expected to occur after sunset on Jan. 10 and will feature Mars, Jupiter, Uranus, Venus, Neptune, and Saturn, with the moon located in the center of the lineup.

While both events can be seen with the naked eye, observers are advised to dress warmly and find a comfortable viewing spot away from city lights. The planetary parade is expected to reach its peak on Jan. 21, but viewers will be able to observe the planets over several nights leading up to this date.
