Updates and Events at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in September

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is gearing up for a busy September with updates and events that will interest visitors of all ages. The park’s Kilauea volcano continues to erupt, attracting thousands of visitors who can expect traffic delays and congestion.

Construction projects continue at the park entrance and Crater Rim Drive, including a new roundabout traffic circle that will improve safety and ease driving for park staff and partners. A temporary Welcome Center has been set up at Kilauea Military Camp (KMC) on Crater Rim Drive east, offering visitor services and amenities.

The deconstruction project to remove damaged buildings from the 2018 summit collapse is complete, with the Uēkahuna observation deck now open. The area offers stunning views of Kaluapele caldera and improved trail access.

Visitors can expect delays and detours during periods of heavy visitation. To help manage congestion, portable toilets are available at various locations throughout the park.

In addition to these updates, the park is hosting several events, including a free Plein Air Painters exhibition on September 20, a Fee-Free Day for National Public Lands Day on September 27, and weekend ranger-guided hikes in Kahuku. These events offer opportunities for visitors to engage with the park’s natural beauty and learn about its unique features.

Before visiting the park, be sure to bring your own drinking water, as the water station at Kilauea Visitor Center is currently unavailable due to renovations.
