A recent trial involving 55 overweight adults compared the effects of two diets: Unprocessed Food (UPF) and Minimally Processed Food (MPF). Both diets followed the UK’s Eatwell Guide, which outlines recommended food groups. The results showed that those on the MPF diet lost twice as much weight over eight weeks, with a 2% body weight loss compared to 1% for UPF diet participants.
The trial found that the MPF diet led to greater fat loss, particularly visceral fat, and resulted in consuming fewer calories (290 fewer per day). Participants on the MPF diet also reported it easier to resist cravings. Dr Dicken notes that “processing still makes a difference” and that choosing whole foods can lead to more successful weight loss.
The trial highlights the importance of nutritional balance and mindful eating. The Eatwell Guide recommends prioritizing high-fibre foods, checking calorie density, and being cautious with calorie-dense foods. Experts also emphasize the need for support and motivation, particularly when focusing on general health rather than just weight loss.
