Urgent Reminder: Get Vaccinated Against the Flu Today

Three recent flu-related deaths in teenagers have sparked a warning from county public health officials to get vaccinated against the flu before it’s too late. According to Dr. Ankita Kadakia, interim public health officer of San Diego County, nearly 80% of 5- to 17-year-olds remain unvaccinated this flu season.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone 6 months old and above receives a flu shot annually due to the changing vaccine components. This year’s season has been particularly challenging, with a total of 73 reported deaths attributed to the flu.

Health experts emphasize the importance of preventive measures, including:

– Frequent handwashing
– Staying away from sick individuals
– Avoiding touching one’s eyes, nose, and mouth
– Cleaning frequently touched surfaces
– Isolating when sick

The influenza vaccine is available at various locations, including doctors’ offices, retail pharmacies, and public health centers. Those without insurance can get vaccinated at community clinics or by visiting the County’s Flu Vaccine Locations page.
