US Adults Hesitant About Buying Electric Vehicles

Despite the availability of over 75 electric vehicle (EV) models in the past four years, only 16% of U.S. adults report being “very likely” or “likely” to purchase a fully electric vehicle as their next car. A recent survey by AAA found that concerns about high battery repair costs, purchase prices, and lack of convenient public charging stations are major barriers to adoption.

According to the survey, 31% of undecided or unlikely buyers cite safety concerns, while 27% struggle with installing charging stations at home. The percentage of consumers who believe most cars will be electric within the next ten years has declined from 40% in 2022 to 23%. Interest in EVs for tax credits and rebates has also decreased.

However, AAA recommends considering hybrid or plug-in hybrid vehicles as a more appealing option, combining the benefits of traditional engines with electric power. The organization will continue to monitor consumer sentiment through surveys and research efforts.

AAA’s survey highlights the ongoing challenges facing the adoption of EVs in the US market. As the industry continues to grow and evolve, it is essential for consumers, manufacturers, and policymakers to work together to address these concerns and promote sustainable transportation options.
