The United States defeated Sweden 6-2 on Saturday to move forward to the final of the ice hockey world championship. In Sunday’s final, the U.S. will face Switzerland, which also advanced with a 7-0 shutout win over Denmark.
Switzerland had previously blanked the U.S. 3-0 in the group stage and was led by Nino Niederreiter’s two goals against Denmark. The Swiss team has never won the world championship, while Sweden will compete for bronze after losing to the U.S.
U.S. goalie Jeremy Swayman made 27 saves against Sweden, helping his team remain on track to win its first world title since 1933. The Americans’ captain, Clayton Keller, praised his teammates’ performance, saying “it’s a good feeling… there’s one more game to win.” The U.S. will focus on the final game to come, while Switzerland and Sweden prepare for their respective bronze medal matches.
