A 20-year-old NGO working to combat labor abuses in China’s supply chains is on the brink of collapse due to a significant cut in American aid. The China Labour Watch (CLW) has had to halt most of its work since January, when former US President Donald Trump ordered a freeze on foreign aid. With over 90% of its funding coming from the US government, CLW’s $800,000 annual budget is severely depleted. Founder Li Qiang warns that staff layoffs are unavoidable, describing the situation as “painful” and “unexpected”. The cut in aid has dealt a devastating blow to an organization dedicated to promoting human rights in China for two decades.
