The US Air Force aims to use the Tesla Cybertruck for missile target practice, testing its durability and potentially paving the way for its adoption as a military vehicle. The military plans to purchase two Cybertrucks for “target vehicle training flight test events” at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.
According to documents obtained by The War Zone, the Air Force wants to buy the Cybertruck due to concerns that it could be used by adversaries as an armored personnel carrier. The unique characteristics of the Cybertruck, including its stainless steel body and 48V electrical architecture, have raised interest among military officials.
Elon Musk has previously discussed the potential for the Cybertruck in a military role, citing its “bulletproof” windows and claimed armor capabilities. However, recent sales data suggests that the Cybertruck’s commercial prospects are dwindling, with Tesla only selling less than 50,000 units last year.
The Air Force purchase could provide an opportunity to validate Musk’s claims about the Cybertruck’s durability and potentially boost its appeal as a military vehicle. If successful, it could pave the way for further development and adoption of the Cybertruck in military applications.
