The United States has carried out 13 air strikes on Hodeidah’s port and airport, two days after a strike targeted Ras Isa port, killing at least 80 people and wounding over 150. The Houthis, an Iran-aligned group controlling most of Yemen, have promised to carry out more operations despite the ongoing US attacks.
The US has been waging a 15-month campaign against the Houthis, with the goal of cutting off supplies and funds for the group. However, the strikes have led to civilian casualties, including humanitarian workers. The UN is “gravely concerned” about the airstrikes, which have resulted in significant damage to critical infrastructure, including ports and oil pipelines.
The US claims the strikes are aimed at forcing the Houthis to stop threatening ships sailing on the Red Sea. However, the Houthis have responded by launching over 100 attacks on vessels linked to Israel, citing their solidarity with Palestinians. The UN Secretary-General has expressed fears of damage to the port and possible oil leaks into the Red Sea.
The strikes have had a significant impact on Yemen’s economy, with around 70% of its imports passing through Ras Isa and Hodeidah ports, which are also critical for humanitarian assistance.
