US lawmakers are questioning the use of artificial intelligence to set personalized flight ticket prices. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has promised to investigate airlines that use this technology. Delta Air Lines has denied using AI for individual pricing, but Democrats believe it may be happening.
Duffy expressed concerns about individualized pricing based on a passenger’s income or personal data. “We would engage very strongly if any company tries to use AI to individually price their seating,” he said. Delta clarified that it won’t use AI for pricing individual tickets and has instead used dynamic pricing for decades, which fluctuates based on factors like customer demand and fuel prices.
The debate comes as airlines plan to deploy AI-based revenue management technology across 20% of their domestic networks by 2025. Democrats have introduced legislation to ban companies from using AI to set prices or wages based on personal data. If found guilty, airlines could face penalties. The Transportation Department will monitor the situation and take action if necessary.
