US Airlines Must Provide Safe Assistance to Passengers with Disabilities

The US Department of Transportation has introduced a new rule requiring airlines to provide safer and more dignified assistance to passengers with disabilities, particularly those using wheelchairs. The rule mandates annual training for employees handling wheelchairs and requires prompt service when passengers need help enplaning, deplaning, or connecting.

As part of the rule, airlines must ensure that every passenger with a disability receives safe travel. The new regulations also require loaner accommodations in cases where wheelchairs are mishandled and provide additional protection for passengers whose wheelchairs are lost or damaged.

The Department of Transportation received complaints from many air travelers about delays, poor treatment, and mishandled wheelchairs. In response, the DOT imposed a $50 million fine on American Airlines after an investigation found repeat violations of rules designed to protect airline passengers with disabilities.
