US airstrikes targeted Yemen’s rebel-held capital overnight, killing at least 59 people, according to Houthi rebels. The strikes also wounded four others in Sanaa, the city held by the Houthis since 2014.
The attacks follow a night of intense airstrikes on Friday that appeared particularly heavy compared to previous days in the US-led campaign against the Houthis. The blasts damaged homes and littered streets with broken glass, but the targets of the strikes remain unclear.
An Associated Press review found the new US operation targeting the Houthis under President Donald Trump appears more extensive than those under former President Joe Biden. The US is now targeting not only launch sites but also ranking personnel and dropping bombs in cities.
The airstrikes began after the Houthis threatened to target Israeli ships again, following Israel’s blockade of aid entering Gaza. The Houthis had previously targeted over 100 merchant vessels, sinking two and killing four sailors since November 2023.
The conflict in Yemen has been ongoing for decades, with the Houthis facing economic challenges and cracking down on dissent and aid workers at home.
