US Airstrikes Target Houthi-Controlled Areas in Yemen

The United States has carried out suspected airstrikes on Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen, pummeling sites across the capital city Sanaa and other rebel-held regions. The extent of the damage and casualties is unclear, but the strikes appeared intense compared to previous days.

In an effort to expand its operations, the US military has shifted from targeting launch sites to firing at high-ranking personnel and dropping bombs in cities. This marked a change under President Donald Trump’s administration, which has taken a more extensive approach than former President Joe Biden’s efforts.

Initial reports indicate that at least seven people were hurt in Sanaa on Friday, with strikes also hitting other areas including the Red Sea port city of Hodeida and the governorates of Amran and Marib. The Houthis did not immediately confirm what targets were hit, except for Sanaa International Airport, which is used for both civilian and military traffic.

The US Central Command, now authorized to conduct strikes without pre-approval from the White House, has not commented on conducting any airstrikes. However, the Houthis claim that at least 57 people have been killed in these attacks.

This new campaign of airstrikes began after the Houthis threatened to target “Israeli” ships again following Israel’s blockage of aid entering the Gaza Strip. The rebels have a loose definition of what constitutes an Israeli ship, which means other vessels could also be targeted.
