The US Justice Department allowed Hewlett Packard Enterprise to acquire rival Juniper Networks last month due to national-security concerns, Axios has learned. The decision was influenced by the intelligence community’s push to help US businesses compete with China’s Huawei Technologies.
According to a senior national security official, allowing the merger proceeds strengthens domestic capabilities and counters Huawei’s influence in the market. Blocking the deal would have hindered American companies and given Chinese competitors an advantage.
The decision reflects President Trump’s close relationships with his Cabinet members, including Attorney General Pam Bondi. Conversations between Bondi and top intelligence officials convinced her that there was a strong national interest in avoiding allies’ adoption of Chinese technology.
