Key European leaders will attend a meeting at the White House on Monday, where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to discuss peace prospects with US President Donald Trump. The format of the meeting marks a significant shift from Zelensky’s previous Oval Office encounter earlier this year.
US security guarantees for Ukraine and “land swaps” are among the concessions Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to during his summit with Trump on Friday, according to top envoy Steve Witkoff. However, Russia has yet to publicly confirm these agreements, which appear at odds with Putin’s past statements.
Trump’s stance on a ceasefire has also shifted. Zelensky still insists on an immediate halt to fighting before a full peace agreement can be reached. Trump, however, is now focused solely on securing a lasting peace deal without pursuing temporary pauses in the conflict during negotiations. The change in Trump’s approach is attributed to his progress with Putin.
