The US Commerce Department has finalized three chip awards worth up to $6.75 billion, marking a significant investment in the country’s semiconductor manufacturing industry. The awards include:
* A reduced award of up to $4.745 billion for South Korea’s Samsung Electronics, down from a preliminary award of $6.4 billion.
* An award of up to $1.61 billion for Texas Instruments to expand its chip production facilities.
* An award of up to $407 million to help fund Amkor Technology’s planned $2 billion advanced semiconductor packaging facility in Arizona.
The finalized awards bring the total value of incentives funding awarded by Commerce to over $33 billion, with over 75% of the proposed $36 billion funding now confirmed. The move is seen as a major boost for the US chip industry, making it home to all five leading-edge semiconductor manufacturers.
