US-Backed Aid Group Opens Distribution Hubs for Gaza Stricken Palestinians

A new aid system in Gaza has begun operations, a US-backed group said on Monday. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation started distributing food to Palestinians who face growing hunger due to Israel’s nearly three-month blockade.

The foundation, which took over the handling of aid despite objections from the United Nations, began delivering truckloads of food to its hubs and distribution to Palestinians had begun. It did not specify how many people were receiving supplies or where the hubs were located.

“We will continue to deliver aid every day,” the foundation stated in a statement. The group’s executive director, Jake Wood, resigned amid concerns about the group’s ability to operate independently.

The US-backed organization claims to be able to reach over 1 million Palestinians, around half of Gaza’s population. However, the UN and other aid groups have expressed skepticism about the new system, saying Israel is trying to use food as a weapon.

Israel has allowed a limited amount of humanitarian aid into Gaza in recent days, but aid groups warn that it is not enough to meet mounting needs. The Israeli military has targeted militants operating from schools, killing at least 52 people, including 36 in a school-turned-shelter.

The US-backed group’s distribution hubs are the latest development in the escalating crisis in Gaza, where over 2 million people are estimated to have been displaced and hundreds of thousands more are at risk of hunger. The Israeli military campaign has destroyed vast areas of Gaza and internally displaced some 90% of its population.

As tensions remain high, extremist groups marched through Jerusalem, chanting anti-Palestinian slogans, while protesters stormed a UN compound in east Jerusalem.
