US Backed Gaza Aid Group Pauses Food Distribution Amid Violence

The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a group backed by the US and Israel, has halted its food distribution after days of violent incidents near its aid delivery sites. The IDF admitted that troops shot “suspects” who failed to heed orders to back away from soldiers.

Critics, including the United Nations, say the GHF is not doing enough to prevent Hamas’s influence on the aid effort. The UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher has urged his agency to take control of the situation. Israeli officials argue that the GHF distribution allows Hamas to benefit.

The US vetoed a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire, hostages’ return, and lifting of restrictions on aid entering Gaza. US ChargĂ© d’Affaires Dorothy Shea criticized the resolution, saying it failed to acknowledge past shortcomings in aid delivery, which allowed Hamas to enrich itself at Palestinians’ expense. She urged support for GHF to deliver aid safely without diversion by Hamas.

Israeli U.N. Ambassador Danny Danon accused the international body of “mafia-like” tactics against NGOs working with GHF. The GHF closed its sites, saying it was bolstering security and would reopen Thursday. However, reopening was delayed due to maintenance work, and eventually resumed aid distribution later on Thursday.
