A new aid system for Gaza, led by the US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), has been implemented despite opposition from the UN and most humanitarian groups. The GHF’s plan centralizes food distribution through hubs, which critics argue allows Israel to use food as a weapon and violates humanitarian principles.
The GHF is run by a group of American security contractors, ex-military officers, and humanitarian aid officials, with the support of Israel and the US. Its initial four hubs are set up near Israeli military positions, making it difficult for Palestinians to access aid without passing through these areas.
Critics argue that this system would potentially violate international laws against forced displacement and allow Israel to control who receives aid. They also point out that the GHF’s plan cannot meet the needs of Gaza’s large and desperate population, as each meal it distributes has only 1,750 calories, below the standard for emergency situations.
The UN and aid groups have rejected the new mechanism, citing concerns about its impact on humanitarian principles and effectiveness. The US and Israel initially supported the GHF, but some have expressed reservations about its ability to operate independently.
As the situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, aid workers are urging a return to traditional methods that have proven effective in meeting the needs of the population.
