A Wells Fargo banker, Chenyue Mao, has been blocked from leaving China due to a criminal case. According to the Chinese foreign ministry, Mao is involved in a case being handled by law enforcement authorities and is subject to exit restrictions. The bank has suspended all travel to China and is working to secure her return.
Mao, a managing director at Wells Fargo, has been with the company for over 13 years. The US embassy in Shanghai expressed concern about the safety and security of American citizens overseas and urged the Chinese government to allow Mao’s release.
The exit ban comes amid diplomatic tensions between China and the US, particularly in the business sector. However, the Chinese government claims that everyone must abide by its laws, including foreign nationals like Mao.
