US Beats Switzerland 1-0 in Historic Ice Hockey Win

Team USA has won its first ice hockey world championship in 92 years, defeating Switzerland 1-0 in overtime at Avicii Arena on Sunday. Buffalo Sabres star forward Tage Thompson scored the winning goal with just over two minutes left in the extra period.

The win marked a historic moment for US Hockey, as it ended a 92-year drought without an on-ice championship since the Americans won it in 1933. The team paid tribute to their late teammate Johnny Gaudreau, who passed away last August, by holding up his jersey during the post-game celebration.

Thompson’s goal came after passes from Utah Hockey Club forward Logan Cooley and Nashville Predators defenseman Brady Skjei. The game was closely contested, with Team USA outshooting Switzerland 40-25. Boston Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman earned the shutout, finishing with 25 saves.

The US team’s victory was emotional, as they celebrated their first on-ice championship in nearly a decade. “We did it, the wait is over,” said Swayman. The Americans will look to build on this momentum heading into the 2026 Olympics.
