The US has intensified its military presence in the Middle East since the weekend as it weighs potential intervention in the escalating Israel-Iran conflict. While details remain vague, a recent deployment of additional military capabilities aims to bolster the region’s defensive posture.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth announced the “deployment of additional capabilities” to the US Central Command in the Middle East on Monday night. The move is intended to enhance the defensive capabilities of the region amid rising tensions between Israel and Iran.
As the situation unfolds, President Donald Trump expressed his desire for a decisive resolution to the conflict. He stated that he’s looking for “a real end” to the fighting but did not provide specific details.
The US Air Force has mobilized its B-2 bombers in response to the crisis, although no new information has been provided on their deployment to Iran. The aircraft are equipped with 30,000lb bunker-buster bombs designed to penetrate deep into rock formations.
Experts warn that multiple impacts would be required to destroy Fordow, one of Iran’s key nuclear enrichment sites. The facility is estimated to be around 80-90 metres below the surface, making it challenging for even the most advanced military assets.
The US has a limited window of opportunity for deployment, as B-2 bombers typically operate from specific bases in the US and Europe. Diego Garcia, a remote island base leased by the UK, is one of the few locations where the aircraft can be refuelled before heading to Iran.
Satellite imagery reveals that six B-2 bombers were spotted at Diego Garcia earlier this month, suggesting the US may consider deploying more than one bomber for an attack. However, no official confirmation has been provided on this development.
The situation remains fluid as the US assesses potential military options. With multiple aircraft carriers and destroyers already deployed in the region, the White House and Pentagon are weighing their next steps amid escalating tensions between Israel and Iran.
