US and Vietnamese businesses have requested the Trump administration to delay imposing a 46% tariff on Vietnamese goods, citing concerns that the levy will harm them and bilateral trade relations. The Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the American Chamber of Commerce in Hanoi expressed shock over the high tariff, saying lower tariffs would benefit US companies, consumers, and the economy.
The country, a major manufacturing base for Western companies, posted a $123 billion trade surplus with the US last year, its largest export destination. President Trump and Vietnamese leader To Lam agreed on Friday to discuss a deal to remove tariffs after a productive phone call. Vietnam had already cut several duties as part of concessions to the US, including pledges to buy more American goods.
The businesses emphasized that a fast and fair agreement would provide certainty for companies and help rectify the trade imbalance between the two countries, benefiting both nations.
