US-Canada Border Airport Closes After Seven Decades

The Piney-Pinecreek Border Airport in Minnesota will close on Friday after seven decades of operation. The airport straddles the US-Canada border and has a unique feature – a paved runway that sets it apart from other border airports. However, its use has been limited due to low demand, resulting in significant maintenance expenses.

According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, the international agreement required to operate the airport is set to expire on December 26 and will not be renewed. The airport was often used by Americans traveling to Canada for hunting and fishing trips, taking advantage of its convenient location.

Staff at the airport have also benefited from a unique arrangement under the international agreement, allowing them to cross between the two countries without going through customs. With the closure, this facility will no longer serve as a hub for cross-border travel or commerce.
