US Candida Auris Infections Surge by Sevenfold in 5 Years

A study at Jackson Health System in Miami found a significant increase in Candida auris infections over the past five years, with cases rising from 5 to 115 between 2019 and 2023. The fungus is resistant to fluconazole but susceptible to micafungin and amphotericin B. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that all isolates belonged to clade 3, a South African strain. The US has seen similar trends, with the number of clinical cases increasing from 51 in 2016 to 4,514 in 2024.

The study highlights concerns over bone and soft-tissue infections, which require wound care, potentially spreading C auris to others. To combat this, rapid identification and resource allocation for infection prevention programs are essential. The authors note that containment strategies need adequate resources and support from clinical microbiology laboratories.
