US Chips Sanctions Hit China’s Self-Reliance Efforts Hard

The US has imposed new chip sanctions on China, set to deal a significant blow to its self-reliance push in the semiconductor industry. Major domestic suppliers could be blacklisted under these measures, according to sources.

The US Commerce Department declined to comment on the sanctions, while China’s foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning condemned the move, stating that Beijing will take “resolute measures” to defend its business interests.

This latest escalation in the US-China tech rivalry follows October 2023 sanctions introduced by the Biden administration. The US has restricted exports of advanced technology targeting the Chinese semiconductor industry, citing concerns about potential military use.
