US Cigarette Smoking Rates Hit New Low Amid Unchanged Tobacco Product Use

US cigarette smoking rates have dropped to a record low of 9.9% among adults, according to a recent report. This decline marks the first time that prevalence of cigarette smoking has reached single digits in the United States, aligning with progress toward a long-term goal set by the Healthy People initiative.

In contrast, tobacco product use, including e-cigarettes and cigars, remained flat at 18.8% of US adults. This lack of change calls for increased efforts to implement comprehensive tobacco control policies that address all products.

The decline in cigarette smoking is attributed to sustained public health initiatives over more than a decade. However, e-cigarette use remains a concern among young adults, with 14.8% outpacing daily cigarette smokers by nearly fivefold.
