The US Department of Energy (DOE) has selected six companies to provide low-enriched uranium (LEU) to nuclear power plants across the country. The contracts aim to encourage domestic production capacity in the US, reducing reliance on Russian-supplied uranium and enhancing energy security.
These companies will compete for future work to supply LEU, driving commercial sector investment in new facilities or expanding existing capacity. The DOE plans to acquire LEU from these sources through contracts that last up to 10 years, with each awardee receiving a minimum of $2 million.
The move supports the Biden-Harris Administration’s goal of ensuring affordable and reliable electricity, as well as good-paying clean energy jobs. Developing domestic production capacity for LEU ensures an adequate fuel supply from trusted sources, maintaining existing reactor fleets and laying the groundwork for future deployments of advanced nuclear reactors.
