US Concerns Over Russian Cyber Influence in Romania Elections

The United States has stated its position on the recent elections in Romania, emphasizing that it respects the sovereignty of the Romanian people in making their choice. The country’s commitment to democratic processes is clear and unassailable.

However, a report by the Romanian Supreme Council for National Defense (CSAT) has raised concerns regarding Russian involvement in malign cyber activity aimed at influencing the integrity of the electoral process. The US strongly advises that this matter be thoroughly investigated to ensure the credibility of Romania’s electoral process.

As a strong NATO Ally and partner in the European Union, the United States values Romania’s contributions to regional stability and security. Any attempt by foreign actors to alter Romania’s foreign policy would have severe repercussions for U.S.-Romania cooperation, potentially deterring American investment in the country. A robust partnership between the two nations has yielded significant progress in defense and economic cooperation, including visa-free travel. The US will continue to collaborate with Romania to safeguard national security and promote prosperity for its citizens.
