US President Donald Trump ordered airstrikes on Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, killing at least 31 people, including women and children, in the process. The strikes targeted the Houthis’ military facilities and missile defenses to protect American shipping, air, and naval assets.
Trump warned Iran that it will be held accountable for supporting the rebel group, promising to use “overwhelming lethal force” until the Houthis cease their attacks on shipping along a vital maritime corridor. The airstrikes are the first under the second Trump administration.
The Houthis reported fresh strikes in various areas, including the capital Sanaa and the northern province of Saada. Residents described explosions as “very strong,” likening them to an earthquake. The strikes come after the Houthis resumed attacks on Israeli vessels sailing off Yemen in response to Israel’s latest blockade on Gaza.
The US operation was conducted solely by the US military, with support from the USS Harry S. Truman carrier strike group and other naval assets in the Red Sea. The strikes are part of Trump’s effort to protect American shipping interests and restore navigation freedom.
