US Consumers Stock Up on Goods Ahead of Expected Tariffs Under Trump’s Second Inauguration

Donald Trump’s second inauguration as president is approaching, and Americans are stocking up on goods in anticipation of tariffs he plans to impose on imports. A recent poll by The Guardian found that nearly half of respondents planned purchases before Trump entered office, while nearly two-thirds adjusted their financial plans for next year.

Many consumers have been buying electronics, household appliances, and construction materials with the looming tariffs on Chinese, Mexican, and Canadian imports in mind. According to economists, prices are expected to increase due to the tariffs, with some companies planning to pass the cost on to consumers.

The National Retail Federation estimates that consumers would pay an additional $6.4-$10.9 billion on appliances if tariffs were implemented. Some households have also bought hybrid cars and essential goods like food and toilet paper in anticipation of price hikes.

Experts warn that consumer prices could rise 1.4-5.1% if Trump implements his tariff plan, equivalent to an additional $1,900-$7,600 per household. Despite this concern, Trump insists on imposing tariffs, citing them as a way to make the country “money.”
