US Costco Workers Vote to Authorize Strike Over Contract Disputes

Seattle – Thousands of Costco workers in the Teamsters union have voted to authorize a strike as their contract is set to expire on January 31. The workers claim that the company, which recently reported record-breaking profits of $254 billion and $7.4 billion in net profits, has failed to offer fair contracts that reflect its financial success.

The Sumner-based Costco Teamsters are seeking an industry-leading contract with increases in pay and retirement benefits. Local 174 member Robert Campus, who has driven for the company for 12 years, stated that it is time for Costco to prioritize its workers over corporate executives. The union’s general president, Sean M. O’Brien, warned that if the company does not meet their demands, they will be left with no choice but to go on strike.

The practice pickets held by the Sumner Teamsters last week were seen as a demonstration of their preparedness for a possible strike. As the contract expires in just over two weeks, workers are waiting for a response from Costco’s leadership on their demands. The outcome is set to have significant implications for the retail industry and its employees.
