The Trump administration has effectively blocked several American companies, including Cadence, Synopsys, and Siemens EDA, from selling software used to design semiconductors to China. This move comes as tensions between the US and China remain high, with a trade war ongoing.
According to reports, the Commerce Department is “reviewing exports of strategic significance to China” and has suspended existing export licenses or imposed additional requirements for some companies. Siemens confirmed that it received new export controls on chip designing software to China and Chinese military end users globally.
The move is seen as another blow in the trade war between the world’s two biggest economies, which paused after negotiations between US and Chinese officials in Geneva. However, a truce set to expire in August may soon be over, leaving room for both countries to raise tariff rates again.
Chinese Embassy spokesperson Liu Pengyu condemned the US actions, calling them “overstretching the concept of national security” and “abusing export controls.” China vowed to take resolute measures to defend its companies’ rights and interests.
